Постойте, а почему вспомогательный глагол to be (в форме прошедшего времени was) стоит в единственном числе?! Это ли не грубейшая грамматическая ошибка?!

Да, совершенно верно, это была бы грубейшая грамматическая ошибка, если бы мы говорили о Питере, Поле и Мэри как о трёх отдельных личностях:
Peter, Paul, and Mary are nice people.

Однако, Peter, Paul and Mary was an American folk group – это другой случай. Здесь говорится об исполнительской группе, и эта группа рассматривается как единое целое. Поэтому и глагол стоит в единственном числе – It was a folk group.
